Cat in the Hat

Prompt: Build using only the original 7 colors, White, Light Grey, Black, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green

Inspiration:

After some thought I decided to build the thinga-ma-jigger as seen in Dr. Suess’s 1957 classic, The Cat in the Hat. The model was a fun mix of character building, vehicle building, and small models for all the “stuff.” Fairly early on I decided to build the model on a book base, inspired by set 40291.

About the Build:

I capturing the whimsey of Dr. Suess artwork was a challenge! I used flex tubes for the thinga-ma-jigger's arms and hot dogs throughout, within the broom and dustpan, inside the fish, and to attach the thinga-ma-jigger's chair! The fish's teapot is a simplified version of the teapot I designed for my Beauty and the Beast build

Fun Fact:

In fitting with the prompt, the model was built in White, Light Grey, Black, Red, Blue and Yellow. However, the original illustrations of the books are printed with only red, teal and black ink. I decided to add in some yellow accents, and used the blue in place of the teal.

I liked the model, and it was my highest scoring build in the competition, but something about it looked off to me. It was only when I was editing it to be posted on Instagram that I realized I could easily remove the yellow accents and make the blue into teal with a single Hue/Saturation adjustment layer in photoshop.

I’m much more satisfied with the model now, despite totally disregarding the prompt!
