I was largely disappointed by how 'cutesy' LEGO's Toothless set was, so I wanted to create a version that more closely held to the proportions seen in the films. I felt that the scariness of the Night Fury was lost in the 2025 live-action adaptation and in the franchise's marketing and merchandise, including the LEGO Icons set. I find the intensity and scariness of Toothless to be what makes his friendship with Hiccup so remarkable!
I like designing alternate builds, both as a restrictive design challenge and to make a model more accessible for other people to build! The Panda Family was a clear candidate for this project, as it was a Creator 3-in-1 set with plenty of useful black parts.
As I often do with alternate builds, I started with the iconic features, in this case the head and wings. The two lime tiles in this set were the obvious choice for eyes, which determined the scale, but I wanted to make this slightly larger than the last Toothless I made, both to use more of the Panda's parts and to set it apart from my prior model. I don't know what I could do to improve this head design, even if I could use any parts I wanted. I also got to experiment with brick-built wings, and besides being a tad too small, I'm happy with their shape.
The head can be posed on a ball joint, the tail sways back and forth, and the wings can be rotated. The legs can even be posed around a bit! Toothless doesn’t care for eels, but you can feed him with a fish, also built with the set’s included parts.
